First generation Bauhaus artist Alexander ‘Xanti’ Schawinsky played a key role in the school’s vital social life. A student of graphic design and experimental photography, he was also deeply engaged in the Bauhaus’s theater workshop as an actor, set and costume designer, creator of performances, and teacher. Published to accompany the exhibition
Xanti Schawinsky: Head Drawings and Faces of War, this publication provides an overview of two bodies of work made between 1941 and 1946, Faces of War and Head Drawings. It also features scholarly essays including cultural critic Michael Bracewell’s text on the effects of elegance and doom, what he calls the “twin poles of the modern age”, within Schawinsky’s drawings.
