Exploratory Works: Drawings from the Department of Tropical Research Field Expeditions examines images produced by the Department of Tropical Research (DTR) during their ecological expeditions to South America and the Caribbean in the first half of the 20th century. Featuring sixty drawings and a series of photographs, the exhibition publication includes an introduction by the show organizers Mark Dion, Katherine McLeod, and Madeleine Thompson; a preface by field biologist George Schaller; texts by members of the DTR; articles by William Beebe on the connection between image making and scientific research; and an interview between Katherine McLeod and post-colonial scholar Richard Drayton.
