Accompanying the exhibition Judith Bernstein: Cabinet of Horrors, this publication features approximately eighteen new drawings commissioned by The Drawing Center, a series of ‘‘dollar bills’ drawings, and found objects. Also included is one of Bernstein’s earliest political drawings from 1969, and a selection of five ‘‘Word Drawings’’ from 1995. Works made during Donald Trump’s presidency often use his insult-driven, childlike syntax and language to distill Bernstein’s anger, disgust, and disapproval of the US administration and policies. Essays as well as an interview by the artist Mickalene Thomas explore Bernstein’s use of powerful graphic and text-based drawing as a tool to engage social issues.
