Of Mythic Worlds Poster

Produced in conjunction with the exhibition Of Mythic Worlds: Works from the Distant Past through the Present, this poster features a reproduction of the artwork Maruwa, 2017, by Warlimpirrnga Tjapaltjarri.

Of Mythic Worlds: Works from the Distant Past through the Present explored the ways in which rituals, myths, traditions, ideologies, and beliefs intersect across cultures, histories, and time periods.

Warlimpirrnga Tjapaltjarri’s canvasses cite ceremonial painting, sand drawing, and the ornamentation of bodies, using dots, bold lines, and circles to create elaborate abstract patterns. There is simultaneous exposition and concealment of sacred symbols in the meandering lines of his compositions, which resemble topographical lines, fingerprints, or the interior rings of a tree trunk. The enveloping sense of time and memory echoed in the twisting lines immerse viewers in a visual field that encourages deep, meditative looking.
