In conjunction with the exhibit The Art of Drawing in France 1400 - 1900, which opened to the public on April 11, 1987, this book surveys French drawings as an art form, sometimes as spontaneous sketches, sometimes as finished drawings, over a period of five centuries.
121 master drawings were selected from the collection of Stockholm’s National Museum, which is among the greatest repositories of graphic arts in the world. Among the master artists whose works were featured in this exhibition are Leonardo da Vinci, Francesco Primaticcio, Claude Lorrain, Nicolas Poussin, Antoine Watteau, J.B.S. Chardin, Francois Boucher, Camille Corot, Jean-Francois Millet, Eugene Delacroix, Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, Edgar Degas, and Paul Cezanne.
